BICA worked with Nature Conservancy Canada to apply for and successfully receive a $3000 grant from the Invasive Species Centre to control invasive phragmites in the Bay of Islands. We’ll be using the funds this summer to hire a contractor to control a big patch of phrag growing on the beach at Flat Point on the North Shore. We chose this site because many BICA members have enjoyed the beach at Flat Point, and left to grow, the phrag will completely take over the beach and destroy the natural environment. We may be putting out a call for volunteers later in the summer to help with the control efforts.

If you spot any phrag colonies as you are out and about in the bay, please take pictures and notify one of your BICA Board Members.
