Fisher Harbour Water Quality Monitoring

In 2010 the Fisher Harbour Liaison Committee was formed to develop and maintain a working relationship and effective communication channels between Alexander Centre Industries Limited and Fisher Wavy Inc. (ACIL/FWI) and the stakeholders in the surrounding area of operations. These stakeholders included one member each from BICA, the McGregor Bay Association (MBA), and the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI). Although the Whitefish River First Nation were involved in the development of the Terms of Reference Document, they did not agree to being a member of the committee. The overall objective of the Committee is to ensure minimal and non-deleterious impact on the environment as a result of shipping operations at Fisher Harbour. The Committee meets once a year and ACIL/FWI is obligated to have regular water testing performed by an independent consulting company at least twice per year and sharing and discussing those results. The committee also discusses and makes decisions on any new products that may be shipped by ACIL/FWI that are not on the original “Acceptable Commodities” list.

The Fisher Harbour site is not in the Bay of Islands area, and the water current through Swift Current Under Highway 6 flows west to east, meaning that any negative effects on our water quality would be much less than might occur in the McGregor Bay area. However, any negative impacts on the environment in our larger area of the North Channel and Northeastern Georgian Bay needs to have a collective voice to deal with these potential situations.
