Phragmites work days – Volunteers needed! JULY 31 and AUG 7
The BICA board is supporting a Phragmites removal program to protect the Bay from this invasive plant species which is having a highly detrimental effect on many of Ontario’s waterways. We have one site in the Whitefish River targeted for cutting, to reduce the spread downstream and into the Bay. There is a second site near the S-bend which will be done on the second day.
Wednesday July 31 is the date we hope to do the river job, and Wednesday, August 7 is for the S-bend site.
Volunteers needed – minimum 2 adults and 4 or 5 teens, for each of the sessions. The Phrag is quite tough and rough so volunteers will need to be wearing long pants, sturdy shoes and work gloves. The main jobs for the teens will be gathering the cut plants and putting them into garden waste bags. Only adults will be operating the power cutter. The second day near the S-bend will involve mostly standing in knee to thigh deep water hand cutting the plants and loading them on a bock. Bring a garden hand cutter if you can.
Don Datz and Bay Villa are supporting the mission with a barge and a burning tank.
